Melvin, winner of Best Documentary at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival
and the Vancouver Film Festival, is a harrowing American Gothic family
portrait full of insight, rage, humour and the desire for revenge. First-time filmmaker James Ronald Whitney turned the camera on his own family in order to confront his grandfather-Melvin Just, who sexually and psychologically abused three generations of children, including the filmmaker. THE PASSIONATE EYE SUNDAY SHOWCASE, hosted by MichaÎlle Jean, presents Just Melvin. Sunday, October 27 at 10 p.m. ET (10 p.m. PT) on CBC Newsworld. Promising to see his grandfather dead or in prison by the end of the film, Whitney documents the path of his grandfather's abusive history, and the countless family members, including Whitney's own mother, who suffered irreparable damage at the hands of a man who subjected his daughters and grandchildren to constant abuse. The legacy of Melvin Just is played out with various family members telling their versions of what happened, until the climax when the filmmaker confronts his wheelchair bound grandfather on camera. Just Melvin, is produced by James Ronald Whitney, a successful stock broker turned filmmaker, who (as you will see in the documentary) has also worked as a Chippendale, a TV game show host and show dancer. The documentary will be followed by an interview with the filmmaker. |
